| The University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine operates the research track, which was financed by the Florida Division of the American Greyhound Track Operators Association (AGTOA). The facility is believed to be the sole greyhound research track in the country. It is part of the University's Center For Veterinary Sports Medicine. |

The concept for the center was developed during the 1970's when school officials realized they could further veterinary sports medicine research by establishing research and continuing education programs involving the greyhound racing industry. Since then, the school has earned a reputation as one of the nation's leading authorities on the welfare of racing greyhounds.
The research track is being used to study many different aspects of veterinary sports medicine research. These areas include: the physiologic effects of racing; incidence and prevention of orthopedic injuries; effect of specific medications or drugs on racing performance; and effects of track surfaces and prevention of injuries. These research and continuing education programs have the common goal of providing the best trained greyhounds and safest racing surfaces available to the greyhound industry.
The research track is presently being prepared for research projects involving the effect of nutrition on racing performance and evaluation of the pharmacokinetics of various drugs in the racing greyhound. |
