2015 All-American Team Announced

Greyhound racing’s leading active racer, Husker Magic, the sport’s undisputed queen from Derby Lane, has been named Captain of the 2015 All-America team, the American Greyhound Track Operators Association (AGTOA) announced today.

This is the 53rd annual All-America team, dating back to 1963. The program annually pays tribute to the top eight greyhounds nationally, as deemed by the member tracks of AGTOA.

Others named to the latest team are: Flying Fired Up (Southland), Need My Moneynow (Gulf Greyhound Park), B’s Headliner (Naples and Southland), Seldom Told (Gulf), Boc’s Hank Jr (Bluffs Run), Highlyclassified (Derby Lane) and Storm Control (Palm Beach).

Tagged for the All-America Second Team are: O Ya Gunsmoke (Orange Park), Red Utopian (Flagler and Naples), AMF Sleekstrangr (Wheeling), AMF Spamwich (Wheeling), Chasmo’s Dutch (Southland), Ted Cruz (Wheeling), Boc’s Tony Romo (Bluffs Run) and TMC’s Sweety Pie (Orange Park).

Husker Magic (Rhythmless-Casino Zada), who also was named to the 2014 All-America team (the only repeater on this year’s squad), is the sport’s leading active winner with 96 career victories. She captured the Daytona 550 BetAmerica National Championship early in 2015, following up with a victory in the Derby Lane $64,000 Sprint Classic. Owned by Imark Kennels and racing for the Abernathy Kennel, the “Blonde Bombshell” won the Derby Lane Spring Meet track title with 23 wins in 32 starts, as well as the North American win title with 41 wins in 57 starts. She was a finalist in the Derby Lane Fall Sprint, and chalked up win streaks of 11-straight and 8-straight in 2015. She continues to race at Derby Lane, and finished a game second in her defense of the title at the Daytona 550 in January. Next goal: breaking into the 100-career win circle.

Flying Fired Up (Rhythmless-Flying Ablaze), owned by Vince Berland racing for the Lester Raines Kennel, captured the Southland $50,000 Sprint Derby and the Southland King & Queen Stake in 2015, en route to being named co-track champ with 22 wins at the W. Memphis oval. Fired Up, who also ran second in the Festival Male Sprint Championship late in the year, tallied a 22-12-6-7 record in 55 Southland starts for the year. A March 2013 product, Flying Fired Up is the youngest member of the 2015 squad.

Need My Moneynow (No More Loving-Need A Date) was Gulf Greyhound Park’s track champion with a sparkling 39-6-4 record in 49 starts. Owned and raced by Sharon Williams, he won the Gulf $10,000 Diane Whiteley Sprint Memorial while sweeping all rounds, and set a track record at the Texas track. With win streaks of 8, 9 and 14 straight during the year, he finished third in the North American win race. Need My Moneynow has moved her act to Orange Park, and captured the Daytona 550 in January.

B’s Headliner (BD’s Grayson-Odd Cherie) took home both the $30,000 Sprint Stake and the $60,000 Derby for the Everett Kennel at Naples while winning 14 times in 25 outings at the South Florida track. Owned by Vince Berland and Tim Ertl, Headliner went on to Southland where she charted a 5-8-9-3 record in 36 starts and finished second in the Razorback Classic. The oldest of the All-Americans (whelped February 2012), and only the second female on the team (joining Husker Magic), Headliner finished the year by running second in the Naples Floridian Sprint. Her sister, B’s Graciebswift was a second-team All-American in 2014.

Seldom Told (Trent Lee-Need A Date), who was a Second-Team All-American in 2014, is a half-brother to fellow All-America Need My Moneynow, and is also owned and raced by Sharon Williams. He captured the Gulf $4,000 King & Queen Stake, while posting a 23-5-2 record in 31 starts at Gulf. He set a new track record at Gulf (later lowered by his half-brother), then tied his brother’s track record later in the year. He has since joined Need My Moneynow at Orange Park.

Boc’s Hank Jr (Kiowa Mon Manny-Boc’s Miss Rodeo), owned by Brad Boeckenstedt and Mickey L. Hasty, won the year’s biggest purse in the $500,000 Iowa-Bred Classic at Bluffs Run. Racing for the Boeckenstedt Kennel, he was Bluffs track win champ with 27 victories in 46 starts. He also finished third in the Bluffs Run Secretary’s Choice race and was a finalist in the Bluffs Run Open. Hank Jr was named co-captain of the All Bluffs Run Team for 2015.

Highlyclassified (Kiowa Mon Manny-Cantrell), owned by the Jacobs Racing Kennel and racing for the John Farmer Kennel, was the top 3/8 greyhound at Derby Lane in 2015. He won the track’s $75,000 Holiday Distance Challenge, finished second in the Derby Lane Distance Classic and third in the St. Pete Derby. His record was 18-16-12-9 in 60 starts, and he posted the track’s three fastest 3/8 times during the year.

Storm Control (Lonesome Cry-Racy Reward), owned by Steve Schlachter, was a multi-stake winner at Palm Beach for B & B Racing—capturing the $50,000 Palm Beach He’s My Man Classic and the $50,000 Art Rooney Sr. St. Pat’s Invitational. He also finished second in the Daytona 550 National Championship.

The aforementioned eight will be honored with All-America plaques at the Greyhound Hall Of Fame awards ceremony on Thursday night, Apr. 28, during the NGA Spring Meet in Abilene, Ks.

Orange Park track champ O Ya Gunsmoke (Kiowa Sweet Trey-O Ya Queenie) led the Second Team All-Americans. He charted a 34-13-7-9 record at the track, while finishing second in the Jacksonville Sprint Classic and the Holiday Stake. He also was a finalist in the Orange Park Derby and bestbet Derby.

Red Utopian (KC And All-Sweetest Revenge), owned by Ann Occhino and raced by Oxbow Kennel, was Flagler track champ with 11 wins in 19 starts and also tied for Naples track win title (13 wins in 24 starts at spring meet). She finished second in the Naples Sprint Stake and had an 8-race win streak, while posting a 34-9-4-3 record in 56 starts.

AMF Sleekstrangr (Djays Octane-Super C Alexis), owned and raced by Thomas A Ferris, was Wheeling track win champ with a 26-9-0-2 record in 39 starts. He ran second in the Wheeling Sweetheart’s Stake, broke the track record and racked up a 10-race win streak at Wheeling in 2015.

AMF Spamwich (Kiowa WW Brother-AMF Push), also owned by Ferris, took home the Wheeling $25,000 George Kellas Memorial while sweeping all elimination rounds. She had a 13-1-3-7 record in 32 Wheeling starts for the year.

Chasmo’s Dutch (Djays Octane-Chasmo’s Layla) finished the year strong at Southland, winning the Festival Male Spring Championship. He had a 20-7-5 record in 44 starts at Southland, while posting 2015’s fastest time at the track.

Ted Cruz (My Rooster-Soft Trent), owned by Kevin Dalton and raced by Clear The Way Kennel, won two distance stakes at Wheeling—the $25,000 John Dallas Memorial and the $10,000 Mountaineer Marathon. He had a 13-8-4-3 record in 39 Wheeling starts.

Boc’s Tony Romo (Flying Penske-Boc’s Slim N Fit) is also owned by the same Boeckenstedt-Hasty duo that owns Boc’s Hank Jr. He won the Bluffs Run $60,000 Open and was a finalist in the Secretary’s Choice at Bluffs. He co-captained the All Bluffs Run Team with a 21-7-10 record in 50 starts at Bluffs.

TMC’s Sweety Pie (Kiowa Sweet Trey-TMC’s Romance) captured the Orange Park $50,000 Derby for the second year in a row. Owned by Rhonda McDonald and raced by the CB Kennel, Sweety Pie had a 15-6-5 mark in 45 Orange Park outings.
