bestbet Derby

A great crowd of people showed up for the finals of the 2015 bestbet Derby on Saturday evening and the top 8 point getters were not going to disappoint. Loads of talent was spread through the ranks, will stakes winners at both 550 and 660, along with several stakes finalists, and a field which included 5 greyhounds that had won at least 2 rounds in qualifying. Here we had some great breakers, some tremendous stalkers, and some greyhounds that can flat out fly in the stretch, so this race was probably going to be determined early on. Who wanted it more? Well as the lure raced by and the box came open, we found out.

Surely it was going to be O Ya Gunsmoke to the front end, right? You know he had been there in 3 straight efforts and really was the best breaker in the bunch, but not so fast my friend. Gunsmoke stumbled at the start and that gave others a chance to seize control. Breaking extremely well was Ww’s Sweetie from the inside and Cp’s Gold Rush from the outside. This duo cleared ahead of the rest and turned out to be the difference maker at the wire. As the field moved through the early turn, greyhounds jockeyed for position, as race favorite Chasmo’s Octane found room on the rail along with the early speeder Gs Flipper. By the front stretch, Cp’s Gold Rush had taken over and padded the lead to 3 full lengths over the rest of the field. The chasers were still behind him, but they were really going to have to work hard in order to get to him before the finish line. In the escape turn they went as Gold Rush continued to command the race, but others would get taken out of contention in one fatal swoop. Pat C Gusher tried to find room, but was offstrided, forced back, and collided with Bostonstrongiris taken both of them out of the race. Gs Taylor slipped by the trouble on the rail and this would prove to be a difference maker for her as well. Down the backside this field drove and this is where it started to get interesting. Gold rush was still up top and in front, but the closers had started to come a calling by the time she reached the far turn. Gold Rush’s comfortable lead had shrunk to just a length or so as Chasmo’s Octane pulled up into contention, but he was not the only one coming. Gs Taylor picked up some major ground down the backside and was flying in the far turn to try and get a chance at the leaders before the wire. Down the stretch the turned and ran and everyone knew that this was going to be a battle for the title and the lead. Gold Rush and Octane, who wanted it more, well as they got about half way down the stretch it was obvious. Gold Rush was having nothing to do with Octane’s charge and proved that it was no fluke for him to be where he was. Giving it everything he had in the final few strides, he drew away from the chaser and secured the victory, and the title, at the finish line with the win. Chasmo’s Octane ran a big race but had to settle for place at the wire. Gs Taylor came from a MILE, and I mean a MILE, behind the leaders to steal away third from the steady chasing defending champ Ww’s Sweetie. Completing the field was the early threat Gs Flipper in 5th, the break stumbler O Ya Gunsmoke, the double trouble escape runner Pat C Gusher in 7th, and the hard trying before I was almost knocked down factor Bostonstrongiris in 8th.
